Using Social Media Guidelines
for Students
We've put together a top ten for using social media:
-
Make sure your Privacy Settings are correct - sometimes after updates to the social media site, privacy settings revert to the deafult option, so make sure your check your settings regularly.
-
Don't rely on Privacy settings - Anyone can share anything on the internet. You can download an app that can alert you when something has been posted that can be linked to you.
-
Dedicate posts to your achievements and accomplishments - links to charity events you have supported to taken part in. And only post if it is the truth.
-
Know that employers DO check your social media accounts - another way of thinking about this is Don't post anything you wouldn't want your grandmother to see. Look at your profile and ask yourself if this someone a Prospective employer would employ.
-
Social Media Sites should NOT be used to raise concerns in your profession - this should be done with your tutor, your year lead or with a member of the admin team as appropriate.
-
Be respectful of other's posts - even if you don't agree with them.
-
Share information you find interesting - Medical science is changing, almost on a daily basis. Sharing interesting information about it can be beneficial, not just to you but others as well.
-
Remember to maintain clear boundaries - especially with patients. If they send you a friend request, should you accept?
-
Maintain confidentiality and seek consent where necessary - If you wish to post something about someone else, make sure that you have their consent, and make sure you maintain their confidentiality if they request it.
-
If you have any problems, we are here to help you.
