PRESCRIBING                Year 5 only

The prescribing process is a mandatory element of year 5.

Please note the policy will differ between Trusts, as each has its own governance arrangements, through the safeguards introduced are very similar.

To improve students' preparation for prescribing, the Medical School has been working with SaTH to develop Student "transcribing". Essentially this means that final year students can complete a drug chart but not sign for the drugs. A doctor can then check it and sign for the drugs prescribed.

Safeguard's SaTH have introduced...

  • Only students who have completed a training package can transcribe.

  • They will be issued with two certificates and a purple pen.

  • Transcription by the students will be with the purple pen to clearly identify the writing as a student's.

  • The doctor who signs the prescription chart must be fully registered. i.e. not an FY1

  • Non-medical transcribers and locums must not sign the prescription chart.

Purple Pens will only be issued on completion of these compulsory elements

  • Successful completion of SCRIPT e-learning module called "taking a safe and effective drug history"

  • Successful completion of SaTH Drug Chart e-learning package

  • Attendance at the lecture on induction.

It is expected you will complete this element within one week of starting your Secondary Care placement in either Rotation 1 or Rotation 2. Failure to do so will be discussed with the Year 5 Lead or the Hospital Dean.
