Student competition to help widen participation and enthuse the next generation of GPs Medical schools are committed to making the medical degree more accessible to anyone with the ability to become a great doctor. If UK doctors are to remain among the best in the world then we need to be sure that talent can be recruited from anywhere in society. Currently, however, we cannot claim this: in 2013, 50% of schools and colleges in the UK did not send a single applicant to medical school. Medical students can play a vital role in widening participation. We know that young people love to hear from students as you are more relatable and have that vital recent experience. We need you to create an exciting outreach session that will: 1. Provide skills to help school students in their application to medicine 2. Promote the exciting opportunities offered by a career in general practice. Your session should emphasise GPs’ ability to diagnose a wide range of complex conditions, quickly and compassionately, and reflect the changing nature of primary care by showing how GPs work in teams with many other health professions.
